[Birth and Early Life]
There was an alpha named Sigrunn, a female known for being a stoic warrior who would defend the law before she defended her own family. Sigrunn lived near the Village of Skalaness in the north of Ulfrheim, frequenting the cave system known as the Great Maw and the forests directly surrounding it. The Great Maw is the largest cave system on the island. It is home to many alphas and was once famously the home of the great god Fenrir prior to his return to the stars.
One year, just as winter began to turn to spring, Sigrunn whelped a single puppy, whose sire was Ashmund. Ashmund was a large and powerful male and regarded to be equally as cold as Sigrunn, but with egoism in place of the honor she displayed. His egoism was not wholly unfounded, as he had proven to be untouchable in dangerous situations, but he was scarcely inclined to place himself in those situations for the benefit of others, and as such he was much more disliked than Sigrunn by the common Felvargs of Ulfrheim.
Sigrunn presented the pup at the Great Maw. Her nature was that of a traditionalist, so the presentation honored the ancestors, both two- and four-legged, and was well-attended by spirits invited by her candles and incense. The other alphas living in the great cave system joyously received the puppy, who was anointed with freshwater and salt and named Arnóra, meaning hearth.
Arnóra was a fat and stout puppy, born dirt-cloud grey of coat and blue of eye. From the time she could walk, she was compelled by prey. Sigrunn encouraged her passion and frequently suggested she pursue appropriately sized morsels, but Arnóra's appetite was such that before long she was regularly attempting to kill animals much bigger than herself, often coming home empty-pawed and lightly injured from her more ambitious hunts.

Unlike Sigrunn, Ashmund was not an attentive parent. He did not consider that parenthood held for him any benefit, so he absented himself to pursue personal glory for the majority of Arnóra's dependent puphood.
When Arnóra was three years old, her fur had lightened to a wood brown. Ashmund returned to the Great Maw, declaring to Sigrunn he intended to teach their pup to share. Sigrunn replied that this did not require a dedicated lesson from a stranger and that Arnóra would learn naturally over time. Ashmund argued that with no siblings, Arnóra would not learn without "the firm and patient paw of a father," to which Sigrunn expressed strong opposition. Eventually it was agreed that Ashmund would engage with Arnóra during meals only, and under Sigrunn's supervision.
One week later, Ashmund declared his teachings had been a success, and left.
Sigrunn considered that Arnóra learned to share naturally, as she had predicted, and that Ashmund's presence had not been instrumental in the development of her empathy or etiquette. She staunchly declined any further demands for involvement from Ashmund, citing his lack of efficacy in the sharing matter as reason enough to disallow further time wasting in the future. The subject became a sore point between the two that persisted for decades after Arnóra became independent.

[Adolescence and Fawn Adoption]
In her adolescence, Arnóra's coat lightened to its full richness, and she was readily recognized by her creamy gold and copper fur, white chin and throat, and small marks resembling sparrow's wings which had appeared on her ribs. She retained her puphood passion for hunting, being well attested to abandon a conversation mid-sentence in order to give chase to an emergent hare that had caught her eye from far distance. However, passion had not yet given rise to expertise, and no matter how fast she ran, many of her hunts still ended with empty jaw and howling belly.
One spring, as she neared 50 years, Arnóra had completed the successful hunt of a doe.

- Emphasize Amma's hunting during this and talk about her joints starting to twinge.
- On one of her early hunts, Amma kills a deer and discovers only after that it was a mother whose fawn was hiding nearby. Thinking that surplus death would ruin the ecosystem of the island, she protects it until it can take care of itself... And maybe a little after that.
(Probably while killing its relatives when she gets hungry, but who's counting?)
- Replace this section with a Beast Hunt drawn to be young & foolhardy Amma who “gets swept up in the moment easily” - nearly dying but not. Get into joints etc. Amma adolescent, lanky body, no scruff, few whiskers, around 50 y/o.
[The TPing of Skalaness]
There was a Felvarg named Soleif who lived in Skalaness. Soleif was a young Felvarg, slight of build and silken-furred, who showed from an early age a passion for tea. She frequently traveled as far away as Sandfell on the opposite end of the island in search of information, ingredients, and techniques that might improve her brews.
- Amma meets Sol during this.
- Rowan: Sol ended up doing a ton of traveling to learn more about tea. Different recipes, ways of preparing it, even dabbled a little in the healing part of it. She probably was doing that plan and prepare and too afraid to actually start the tea shop type deal. [8:25 PM]
- Rowan: So she'd have been the one to keep in touch through writing or stopping by when her path brings her close to where Amma is living at the time. [8:25 PM]
- Sol gives Amma her nickname? :)
- Amma is like 70
[Expedition]
- Amma knows Sol in Skalaness and frequents the village but doesn't live there yet.
- This is her first time going to Helheim's Gate.
- Freyja gives Amma instructions on how to navigate the Path of Valhalla and reach Fenrir's Incisor which don't apply in DOU because the forest growth has changed (as the fire is recovered from etc).
- Amma roughly 100 y/o in this - she is a young adult who is coming to learn how to be responsible
? [Darkness over Ulfrheim]
In the late winter an unnatural darkness descended over the Vale of Whispers, shrouding the area in shadows and limiting the growth of the flowers that in normal years blanketed the meadow.
The Vale of Whispers is a vast meadow, bordered on the south by the Spine of Odin mountains and the Pass of Heidrun, stretching to the edge of Lake Skaro to the east. Navigating the Vale is the only way to access the unnamed mountain to the north and west and its extensive cave system Vaskar below. Even in uninteresting times the Vale is a difficult and hazardous landscape to traverse, with rolling seas of mist limiting visibility and trees and pitfalls dotting the grounds, and it is said the spirits of the vanished haunt any living being that attempts to pass through.
The mysterious darkness attracted a number of Felvargs from everywhere in Ulfrheim who were intrigued by the daytime night; in turn, they each failed to return from their expeditions. It was widely assumed they had been abducted.
Hearing of this, Amma decided to travel to the Vale to assist in efforts to find and rescue those lost in the darkness, bringing her adopted daughter Birla with her for safety, as Birla had grown notably large and strong. Birla, who had recently been studying under a new mentor, found and plucked a flower that she knew to glow even in the dimmest environments and strung it on a line, hopeful that any winds or wet air in the Vale would not be able to suppress its light. The flower on the line was hung from Amma's neck, while Birla wore her cloak to carry additional supplies in its folds.
When they came to the edge of the Vale, Amma was struck by the flying body of Freyja, who had herself come to the Vale to discover the origin of the darkness. The two tumbled to the ground and when they disentangled themselves, Freyja's face was panic stricken. She said, "There is a darkness, a darkness over the Vale!" and insisted Amma enter the shroud only in a pair or more to protect herself, seemingly not noticing Birla, who had grown tall enough to be perhaps mistaken for a tree in the poor visibility on the edges of the meadow. Before Amma could respond, Freyja disappeared back into the Vale.
By this time, many alphas had attempted entry into the Vale of Whispers, but had vanished just as had the others.
Amma and Birla entered the darkened meadow, searching for hours by flower-light with no luck. After some time they came to a ridge with what seemed to be a figure atop it. They called out in greeting, but rather than approach in friendship, the figure extended its own dark shadow force, eyes glowing red, and captured both Amma and Birla in its grasp. They were lifted into the air and compressed painfully by the magic. Then Birla retrieved a potion in a glass bottle from her cloak, which she crushed between her teeth, bloodying her mouth and breaking the spell. While Amma struck the ground hard, Birla landed with enough grace to be able to roll back onto her feet and chase off their attacker.

When she returned to Amma, led by the light of the flower she had picked, she reported that she believed it had been Roskva that had attacked them, based on the size of the figure she had chased and the type of magic they had used, although she had found it difficult to make out the markings on the Felvarg to know for sure. Amma responded that this was the type of behavior she had come to expect from Roskva, and commented that "I wouldn't be surprised to learn this was all her doing... Although I didn't think her magic was this strong."
They decided to take some time to recover, sitting on the ridge together, before continuing in their search for the missing Felvargs. Then they heard sounds of pawsteps, and once again Freyja appeared to them, standing at the bottom of the ridge where they had been when they had been attacked. She was visibly less panicked but had a new vigor and intensity, and after a relieved greeting tasked them with finding several of her alpha allies that had been lost to the Vale's shadows. "You must tell them I am looking for them," she shouted, "and that I will be waiting at the top of Fenrir's Incisor." Amma and Birla agreed to look for the alphas, and Freyja ran off into the darkness again.
When they collected themselves and began looking again, the first alpha they located was Bjorn. The giant curly-coated Felvarg eagerly joined their search, expressing that he had also been trying to locate his siblings and father, and they soon came across Saga, who was alone but had brought with her a bright lantern. Saga informed Amma, Birla, and Bjorn that she had also spoken with Freyja and been tasked with collecting her trusted alphas, and said that the darkness was leaking out of the Vale of Whispers and spreading into the surrounding areas, and would possibly cover the entire island in night soon. With four pairs of eyes and two light sources, and more adding each time, the group quickly collected the remaining alphas Freyja had named and several non-alphas besides, and initiated the journey to Fenrir's Incisor with Ylva, Fenrir, Ulfr, and Titus in tow.

Fenrir's Incisor is the tallest mountain range on the island, and is nearly as far from the Vale of Whispers as it is possible to get, climbing into the sky on the opposite coast. Fenrir himself, who knew Ulfrheim better than anyone, chose the route they took to travel there: west until they hit water, then following the shoreline of Lake Skaro north until they found the head of the bridge that connected its ends. The road leading away from the lake could be taken directly to the village of Skalaness, which bordered the forest known as the Path of Valhalla that sat at the base of Fenrir's Incisor.
The journey to Skalaness was uneventful, though the darkness arrived first. They were greeted gratefully by villagers with lanterns whose loved ones they had located and returned.
The group that had been collected in the Vale split as it passed through Skalaness. Freyja's allies pressed on to meet her, and the rest stayed in the village to recover from their time lost in the Vale. There were wounded, hungry, and disoriented among them. Amma chose to travel to Fenrir's Incisor to meet with Freyja, in case she had information that would aid in uncovering the origin of the darkness. Birla elected to stay in Skalaness to help with her knowledge of herbal medicine, and parted from Freyja's allies in friendship. Amma kissed her on the head and told her to offer her home and hearth to any Felvargs in need of a place to sleep.
The Path of Valhalla was known to be just as dangerous as the Vale of Whispers, with no landmarks and visibility obstructed by trees. However, Fenrir and his children knew the forest well, having explored its depths many times, and so the journey to the base of the mountain passed without incident.
As Amma and the group ascended the mountain, they found that the darkness had not yet reached the peak, though when they turned to look out at the island, they found that half of it was engulfed. They joyfully reunited with Freyja, who had been waiting just where she had promised. Immediately they put their heads together, deep in discussion. Amma, who had nothing of value to offer after all, stayed respectfully on the edges and did not interrupt.
After some time, it became clear Amma was not alone in not knowing what was causing the darkness or what could be done about it.
Fenrir broke from the group and approached Amma. His bright yellow eyes were intense. The great titan leaned down to Amma's level. "I have a strong feeling I know exactly who is behind this tyranny," he said. "Loki."
Loki was known as the mad king, and was the father of Fenrir, whose children were Bjorn, Ylva, and Ulfr. He was once a god, and his magical powers were still formidable in spite of his transformation into a Felvarg. It was not unheard of for Loki to attempt to take the lives of his son and all the Felvargs who allied themselves with him.
Amma did not know Loki well, and in fact went out of her way to avoid him. Fenrir told her this was exactly what he intended to exploit. "The faces here," he said, "he would recognize immediately. We would have no chance of entering Helheim's Gate unnoticed. But you, you would! I want you to travel there and explore its vast caverns in secret, and report back to us here. I am sure you will find answers there that will explain the darkness."
Neither combat nor subterfuge were among Amma's skillset, but nevertheless she agreed Fenrir's plan was a sound one and that she was the most likely among them to be able to remain unrecognized in Helheim. She accepted the task and asked if Ylva or Bjorn might accompany her down the mountain and through the Path of Valhalla, so she would not get lost before she reached the traversable roadways. Fenrir responded favorably, but said it was up to his children to decide whether and which would go with her. Then Amma approached the group of Freyja's allies who were still engaged in dense conversation, and asked if Ylva or Bjorn would escort her through the forest. Ylva said she thought it was a fine idea, but that she feared her brothers would come to blows if the conversation continued without her there to moderate, therefore it should be Bjorn that went with Amma. Freyja assured Ylva that Bjorn and Ulfr would not dare escalate to fighting under her watch, and suggested Ylva take Amma through the Path of Valhalla. She further suggested that Ylva could spend time in Skalaness tending the Felvargs recovered from the Vale of Whispers while Amma gathered information in Helheim, and be available to help her back to the mountaintop when she returned. Amma and Ylva found this to be an agreeable course of action, and they left at once to descend the mountain.
Nothing of note happened during the journey through the Path of Valhalla. Ylva parted ways from Amma at the center of Skalaness, going to find Felvargs in need of aid while Amma took the south road towards Helheim.

- Note: All of DOU takes place between Amma lvl 3 HU and Roskva attempting/failing to revive Létta - Amma does not know Roskva's backstory or why she's attempting to kill her. So Amma is somewhere between 300 & 500 y/o
- Note: Remember to keep in mind that this is an oral history so only the information that Amma would give to someone else (or that someone else would recall, if she's not the only one in the scene) is information that would be passed down in the text.
As you approach Helheim's Gate there is a darkness like no other, on the caves tips you can see shamans and witches chanting and burning god knows what. It smells of death, rotting death. As you enter, the caverns immediately turn you around, it's easy for one to get lost in its winding confusing tunnels as every which way you look... well, looks the same really. Up ahead there is a torch, you place yourself behind a boulder and listen in on the conversation taking place. Two Felvargs stand whispering, you can only make out a few concerning words when the larger of the two spots you, he snaps at the whispering Felvarg to hush him and once more at his back end to send him fleeing. There is no point in hiding now, you reveal yourself to the mighty beast. He is asking if you're one of the new recruits, whether you are or not is irrelevant because you will lie regardless, a nod seals the deal as he urges you retreat to the Gateway Room, where Loki is preparing a speech. The calm will not last child, he repeats this multiple times as he disappears into the winding path ahead.
You expore every inch of the cave until you turn down a passage that is so thin you had to force yourself inside, the passage has lights on both sides as far as the eye can see. The path seems endless, yet you are compelled to continue following it. Finally up ahead you see a bright light, as you get closer you can hear what sounds like hundreds of Felvargs arguing. You enter the room, this is definitely the Gateway Room, there is what appears to be hundreds of Felvargs sat in formation discussing various topics, its loud and most of them are covered in armor and weapons. What is going on? Suddenly the entire room falls silent, you look around curiously when you notice Hel surfaces on a large pillar front and center, she clears her throat and looks up. Loki bounds down the caverns edges, nimble and balanced despite his large bulky form. When he takes a final leap to the pillar beside Hel he sends debris down a cliffside as it crashes down into the crowd, a single yelp emit from one of the many affected Felvargs and when it did, Loki would turn and snarl with a snap in their direction, "Is that weakness I hear? You, you there! Get out!" Loki scolds and before the Felvarg could defend itself with words it was forcefully removed by the surrounding Felvargs. Loki paces the pillar as he rallys his forces, finally his plan had come to pass. Soon darkness would consume the Island and just when it did, Loki and his army would attack the villages of Ulfrheim, bringing death and pain to all those who choose to follow Fenrir and his army of do gooders. This island was not big enough for the both of them and Loki had much bigger plans, afterall Fenrir was the one thing keeping Loki or any other Felvarg from venturing onto the mainlands, soon, Loki would have power over more than this pathetic Island, but over mankind as well. Now he was doomed to be a Felvarg he could become and build the army his son had failed to do so.
You escape Helheim's Gate by the skin of your teeth, once outside it still felt as though you were inside. The darkness swallowed you whole, it left a pit of emptiness in your stomach as you broke free into what was before, darkness, but now after being inside Helheim, seemed like light of day. It only just appeared to you how much of an effect the darkness had on you, when even the dim light hurt your eyes and sent you dizzy momentarily. Make your way back to Fenrir's Incisor and tell him what you will.
